Memories of the Civilian Conservation Corps

Around 1939, my father, Walter Shorock, dropped out of high school in New York City and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCs). First he went to Letchworth State Park in upstate New York. Then he went to a camp near St. Maries, Idaho. These photos are from the camp in Idaho. They were found in an envelope showing that they had been developed at a drug store in St. Maries for a cost of 25 cents. It is unlikely that they were ever printed or seen until now. Dad worked in the mess hall as one of the cooks. The main project of the camp was the building of the bridge you see in these pictures.

In 1955, the family took a cross-country camping trip in a station wagon.
We stopped in Idaho at the bridge the CCCs had built and this picture was taken on that visit.
