During our first two visits to Newfoundland, we had heard most of the local bands we really wanted to hear. However, there were still a few bands and individual performers on our "to do" list. High on that list was Síochána. By listening to Newfoundland radio stations, we knew that they were a hard-driving, rollicking band. However, for the first several years, most of their gigs were benefit events instead of the festivals that occupy much of our time in the province. Now they are taking on more professional gigs. It was therefore with great pleasure that we saw they were booked for traditional night at the George Street Festival this year.
The national police force in Ireland is known as the Garda Síochána - Irish Gaelic for keepers of the peace. The name of the band says a lot. Although they play music from a variety of genres, they lean toward Irish music. Furthermore, the band consists of five policemen from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and one member of the St. John's International Fire Department. They do this in their time off to enjoy making music together and also to help promote worthy causes in the province.
After what we had heard on radio and seen on TV, we expected a lot from this band. We were not disappointed. They exceeded our expectations.
