April 2007 trip to NJ

Kearny, New Jersey

Home, Sweet Home

This was the house I lived in from 1949 until I left for college in 1962 (as well as each summer until 1973). Mom still lives there and my younger brother, Eric, is also currently living there.
Home

Cherry Tree

In my boyhood, my father planted a dwarf cherry tree in the backyard. It turned out to be not so dwarf. It puts out lots of cherries but they're too high for anyone but the birds. The tree is quite attractive in the spring.

Eric & Mom

The springtime weather got Eric & Mom out in the backyard.

Paul and Mom

My other brother, Paul, flew in from Albuquerque during the last few days of my visit.

Mom & her 3 sons

Over-the-fence backyard neighbor, Anne, was kind enough to take a photo of the four of us.
Anne is about to move to Pennsylvania, so I wanted a picture of her with Mom.

Aline Moss

We paid a visit to Aline Moss who now lives in a nursing home. Her sons, Don & Bob, were among my best boyhood friends. I visited Don on the first & last days of my visit to Kearny. On Friday, Bob & I took in a concert in Jersey City.

Kearny Lions

I'm a member of the Noon Lions Club in Great Bend, KS. We meet each Tuesday at lunch. When I'm in Kearny, I visit the Kearny Lions Club. I had visited last November, so this was my second visit to this club.

Margaret Rutzler

On Sunday, Mom & I went to church at Grace Methodist. One of the regulars there is Margaret (Knox) Rutzler, one of my contemporaries at Kearny High School. I built and maintain a web site for my fellow Kearny High alumni.

Feeding the Needy

Each Monday, one of the churches in Kearny prepares a lunch for the needy and some of the women from Grace Methodist distribute the lunches in Town Hall Park, which is next to the church. Mom is usually one of those distributing the lunches.

Kearny Crew

Kearny High is strongest in two sports that are unusual. The school traditionally has one of the strongest soccer programs in the nation but this visit was in the spring, not during soccer season. Kearny is also known for its rowing teams. Kearny Crew has its own web site. There's a boathouse near the bridge to Belleville where crew teams from Kearny, Belleville & Nutley all keep their boats and do their practicing. I was driving by the boathouse one afternoon and decided to take a look around.
