Fenelon Place Elevator
At 540 miles, the trip from Madison to Lawrence was the longest single day drive of the trip. However, I did spend an hour in Dubuque. I drove to the base of the Fenelon Place Elevator. The fare was $2.00 round-trip or $1.50 one-way with a bicycle. I chose the latter and hauled the bike on board. Having the bike gave me a way to tour the elegant neighborhood at the top of the elevator. The fifty cents I saved on the fare was offset by the amount of rubber I burned on my brakes on the downhill trip.
On to Lawrence, Kansas
