Micheaux' tombstone

In 1951, Oscar Micheaux was laid to rest in this plot at the Great Bend Cemetery. In 1988, this tombstone was placed here. The Golden Anniversary Oscar Micheaux Celebration marked the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the pioneer filmmaker and the focal event of the weekend was the laying of a wreath at Micheaux' grave. Temperatures in the 30's, accompanied by snow flurries, did not discourage the crowd, many of whom had traveled far to honor Micheaux.
