Only 15 months before the Festival, the Barton County Arts Council took possession of a former drug store / bank / shoe store in downtown, just two blocks from The Crest, and converted the building into an art gallery.

During October, 2000, the Center's window display was used to heighten awareness of Oscar Micheaux.

During the week of the Festival, a second Micheaux window display was installed (see below) and, on Thursday morning, the businessmen of the community were invited to a Chamber Coffee at the Center.

When the building was acquired in January, 2000, the priority was remodeling the main room into an art gallery. There was another room in the back, but it was a shambles. Festival organizers thought their should be an alternate venue where attendees could simply watch movies. The problem was that the back room was sorely in need of repair. The Micheaux Festival provided a deadline and deadlines provide focus, so with lots of volunteer help the job got done just in time. (The carpet was laid on Friday!)
