A Chronology

Wednesday, March 21, 2001

The action is at the State Capitol in Topeka.

Thursday, March 22, 2001

The Chamber Coffee is held at the Barton Arts Center.

Friday, March 23, 2001

Volunteers make preparations in the lobby of the Crest, at the Zarah Mall, as well as the Barton Arts Center.

Saturday, March 24, 2001 — morning

While books and coffee are sold at the Zarah Mall and movies are shown at the Art Center, the main attention turns to The Crest, where welcoming remarks are given. Then Pearl Bowser shows and discusses the documentary she produced for PBS's American Experience.

Saturday, March 24, 2001 — noon

Most of those attending the event strolled one block to the Elks Club where a buffet luncheon was served and there was time for mingling.

Saturday, March 24, 2001 — afternoon

At the Crest, a panel discussed Micheaux' movie, Within Our Gates. Then there were presentations by Charlene Regester, Ron Green, James Leiker and Eric Monder. Meanwhile, the Zarah Mall and Arts Center were open as alternate venues.

Saturday, March 24, 2001 — evening

James McDaniel and his friend, Michael Unthank, held an interesting question-and-answer session at the Crest.
Those attending were then invited to the reception in the courtyard at the Angus Inn.

Sunday, March 25, 2001 — morning

A gospel song fest with a long list of performers was held at the Crest.

Sunday, March 25, 2001 — afternoon

At 1:00 p.m., a procession led from the Crest Theatre west on Broadway to the Great Bend Cemetery where the buffalo soldiers and a crowd had gathered to hear remarks and see a wreath laid at Micheaux' tombstone.
Attendees then regrouped downtown, where speakers at the Crest included David Haley, Charles Berg, Richard Grupenhoff, Dave Strain, Jane Gaines, and Kevin Willmott.

Sunday, March 25, 2001 — evening

Sunday evening marked the Oscar awards in Hollywood, but we had our own Oscar to celebrate with the “Other Oscars” at the Golden Belt Country Club. There were live and silent auctions of items donated to the event, many by well-known Hollywood celebrities unable to attend. The party also served as a 43rd birthday party for James McDaniel.
